Reiki Principles

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings,
Just for today, I will let go of any worry,
Just for today, I will let go of any anger,
Just for today, I will be honest
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing including myself

What is Reiki?

Reiki is the name used for a system of healing founded in Japan by Mikao
Usui during the 18th century. It is essentially known as a subtle energy healing modality which is gaining popularity as a complimentary therapy.

Reiki (Pronounced RAY-KEY) is a Japanese word with two elements:

How can Reiki help me?

Illness can be a very difficult time. Reiki can help us to manage this by promoting relaxation and bringing balance to mind, body and emotions.

Benefits can include deep relaxation, promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well-being. Reiki empowers and supports positive personal life choices, you may want to discuss this with your Reiki practitioner as there might be a particular area of your life you would like to focus on. Reiki can also encourage a mindful and self care approach to life’s challenges.

Reiki’s gentle approach is suitable to use with most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers.

Being complementary, Reiki works effectively alongside healthcare and other natural treatment options.

A typical session and what to expect

The method of a Reiki session is simple. The person remains clothed and lies on a treatment bed or sits on a chair if preferred. The practitioner gently places their hands on or just above different parts of the body. There is no massage however gentle touch techniques may be used.

The person receiving Reiki may or may not feel sensations during a treatment. Experiences reported by other clients include feeling; heat and/or vibrations in areas of their body, deeply relaxed and a peaceful sense of well being on all levels.

Contra-indications: There are no known contra-indications for Reiki. It is a non-intrusive treatment that can be delivered in a variety of settings and requires no special equipment. Reiki practitioners are not trained in medical diagnosis and will not be able to provide this service. If people are concerned about their symptoms they should see their GP.

Note: Reiki is being used in various health care and voluntary sector settings including private practitioners, GP surgeries, hospitals, hospices, cancer services, mental health services, post-operative recovery, drug rehabilitation, prisons, and in the care of older people.

How it works

At its simplest level, Reiki helps to reduce the impact of stress, by releasing tension from the bodies systems. Reiki enables the person to find balance within encompassing the; mind, body, spirit and emotions. It can also, depending on the persons physical health at the time, elevate the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to function more effectively.

It is not yet fully understood as to how Reiki helps the body heal. However, there is increasing research recording the effects of Reiki (such as lowered blood pressure, heart rate and stress symptoms; improved health and well-being), we have only theories as to what causes these effects or the ways through which these changes occur.

Reiki engages many body systems, one of which, shifts the body from the “fight or flight” (stress) response to the relaxation response, which supports the body’s own natural healing. Some researchers theorise that Reiki works on a quantum physics level, in what science refers to as the biofield.

The biofield is a term chosen by a team of National Institute health scientists in 1994 to describe the vibrational and electromagnetic energy field that is said to surround and interpenetrate the human body. For thousands of years, ancient, indigenous systems have recognised a balanced biofield as the foundation for wellness and seen any imbalance as the beginning of illness.

There are many therapies that work on realigning and restoring balance in the biofield including: acupuncture, qi-gong, shiatsu, and yoga. Reiki appears to be the gentlest of these therapies, re-balancing the person through subtle energy vibrations.
